2007 Kansas Child Care in the 21st Century Listening TourDay Care Homes Child Care Centers and Private PreschoolsThe Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) conducted the 2007 Kansas Child Care in the 21st Century Listening Tour during October, November and December 2007. The statewide tour launched the Department's initiative to redesign the Kansas child care licensing system to meet the needs of children and families in the 21st century. During the listening tour, the Department received comments from 600 child care providers, parents, advocates and the public. In addition many emails and written comments were received. The redesign of the child care licensing system is intended to address policies, procedures, inspection protocols, and standards of care for day care homes, private preschools and child care centers. The focus will be on developing a licensing system and standards of care that ensure adequate protections are in place to address safety concerns, to provide a solid foundation to meet the child care needs of children and families across Kansas and to address business realties that face child care providers in providing quality child care services that are available, affordable and accessible. A team comprised of stakeholders from around the state will review the comments received during the listening tour and will make recommendations for policy changes to KDHE.
